James Joseph FINNERTY
DECEMBER 6, 1949 – MAY 13, 2022
Jim Finnerty, 72, passed away peacefully, in Florida on May 13, 2022. Born in Akron, Ohio on December 6, 1949, he attended Buchtel High School and The University of Akron, where he developed a lifelong devotion to the Akron Rugby Club. Jim worked 30 years at Akron’s historic Glendale Cemetery, where his love of history flourished and then accomplished his dream of opening an Irish pub, Brendan and Finn’s, in downtown Akron, before spending his later years in Florida, where every day was spring break.
Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan, and survived by his second wife, Allison; brother, Tim; children, Sean, Beth, Liz (Blair), Rose (Dave & Tiani); and granddaughters, Nora and Elyse, who were the lights of his life.
The most important thing to Jim was the people who surrounded him, gravitating to his large personality and enduring loyalty. These people not only became friends but family, for which he would do anything. An amazing storyteller and historian, Jim was also a lover of film and music. From all of Akron, to the Riverwoods community, his legendary presence and never ending smile will be sorely missed. Jim was not afraid to live life to fullest and our love for him will keep us going until we meet again. In his own words, “be strong and remember we are mortals here and will be united in heaven.”
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, June 12 from 2-6pm at the Akron Rugby Field.
Private Family Burial.
